Thought I'd save time cloning drives with a cheap USB dock, and it cost me a client's tax records
I picked up a $25 no name USB to SATA dock off Amazon to speed up drive swaps at my bench, and it worked great for about 3 weeks. Then last Tuesday I cloned a client's failing 1TB drive for a data recovery job, and the dock silently wrote garbage past the 400GB mark with no error codes at all. The original drive died the next morning during my verification pass, so those tax records are gone and the guy is talking to a lawyer. I tested the dock on 4 known good drives after and it corrupted every single one, so now I'm back to direct SATA connections only. Has anyone found a cheap dock that actually passes a full write verify, or do I just eat the cost of a real duplicator?
