Took a client call from my truck and fixed a RAID array
Last month I was stuck at a jobsite in Pittsburgh when a server alert came through, so I dove into remote diagnostics using just my phone and a portable hotspot. Turns out it was a simple rebuild that looked scary, and I walked the client through it in 20 minutes without ever opening my laptop. Does anyone else handle emergency tickets with just mobile tools, or am I being reckless about response time?
Twenty minutes to rebuild a RAID array from a phone in a truck? I have to call that out because a rebuild that fast usually means the controller was doing the heavy lifting and you just clicked go. I have watched arrays take six hours on a good day, so if you really wrapped it in 20 minutes I want to know what hardware they are running. The part that gets me is the hotspot, because one dropped bar in the middle of a rebuild command and you are driving back to Pittsburgh. Not saying it is reckless, but I would have been sweating the whole time.
