Used to write client proposals by gut feeling, now I use a checklist from a failed $12k project

Lost $5k once on a kitchen remodel contract because I forgot to write down who pays for permit delays. That mistake taught me checklists are just life lessons we had to learn the hard way. Now I have them for everything from grocery shopping to car maintenance, saved me way more than 20 minutes.

I used to think my sourdough starter was fine if it smelled a little boozy

Found the same thing with mine after a long work trip left it neglected for a week. Went back to feeding twice a day for a few days and that sour nail polish smell vanished. @the_leo brought up a good point about temperature too, I keep mine in the pantry near the water heater so it stays warm. Once I started paying attention to the smell as a sign of hunger instead of just activity, everything clicked. My loaves went from dense and sour to light with a nice tang, totally worth the extra feeding for a couple days.

Caught myself using the wrong side of a speed square for years

Friend of mine spent years cutting angles by guesswork til someone showed him the square trick.

Warning: That $800 'career accelerator' course I bought was a total waste

I used to think paid courses were just a shortcut for people who didn't want to do the work, but now I realize most of them are just preying on people who are actually trying hard. These "accelerators" are basically just a tax on ambition, and it's made me a lot more careful about who I trust with my money.

That old electrician in Birmingham told me to stop using push-in wire connectors, and he was right

One melted halfway through inside a junction box"? That's honestly terrifying.
