Blew $200 on that self leveling stuff before I figured out what I was doing wrong
Can we talk about self leveling underlayment for a minute? Back in March I was doing a small bathroom pour in a house over in Aurora and the floor was maybe 3/16 out over 10 feet, so I figured I would just skim it with the self leveling and call it a day. I bought two buckets and the primer and a mixing paddle and a spike roller, all in it was right around $200, and I watched a few videos where guys just dump it and let it walk. What nobody showed me is that if you mix it even a little too wet it pools in the low spots and leaves a ridge at the edge of the pour, and if you mix it too stiff it just sits there mocking you. I ended up with a hump by the toilet flange and had to grind it back down two days later, which took longer than just floating it with patch would have in the first place. The old finishers I learned from used to just use a straightedge and some sand mix and a little water and call it done, and honestly they were not wrong. So for you guys doing this every week, do you actually use the self leveling for small stuff or is it just for big open areas where you cannot reach everything?
