Broke down and tried the sponge finish on a driveway in Houston

Been doing concrete for 12 years. Always hated sponge finishes. Thought they looked weak. But I had this big driveway job near the Heights in Houston. Homeowner wanted a smooth look without the burnished glare. My partner said just try the damp sponge pass after the float. So I did it on a test patch. Man it evened out the surface way better than I thought. No lines, no swirls. Just a clean matte finish that took the stain perfect. Got paid $3,200 for that job. Anyone else here come around on a technique they used to swear off?

Sponge finishes are fine til the first rain hits that matte surface wrong.
