Hand floated every slab for 5 seasons, tried a power trowel last month and feel dumb
I did all my flatwork by hand from 2019 to 2024, just a bull float and a magnesium hand float. Took me 45 minutes on a 12 by 20 patio pour in Council Bluffs last month and my back was toast, so the guy I hire for big jobs let me try his 46 inch power trowel. Finish came out smoother in half the time and the homeowner actually asked if the surface was polished. Now I'm wondering if I should have bought one back when I started. Any of you still hand float everything, or did you switch at some point and never look back?
Hand floating still has its place on small jobs and tight spots where a 46 inch machine won't fit. A power trowel saves your back but you still gotta know when the concrete's ready, otherwise it burns the surface and no amount of smoothing fixes that.
