DAE get tired of the sewer repair conspiracy talk on my block?
Our street has been dug up for weeks for sewer fixes, but some neighbors swear it's really for laying secret cables. In my experience, this kind of local debate just makes everyone argue and nothing gets solved. How do you deal with people who see a conspiracy in every city project?

Man, local rumors have a life of their own, don't they? (We had a whole thing about new streetlights being for mind control, I swear.) It gets to the point where trying to argue facts just makes people dig in deeper. Sometimes you just have to nod and change the subject to the weather, because you can't really win.

Wait, could be more than just pipes, you know?

But what does "more than pipes" even mean in real terms? Like, are we talking secret tunnels, old mining shafts, or some buried infrastructure nobody told us about? People throw out these vague ideas but never get specific. What's the actual theory here based on?

We had the same issue when they replaced the fire hydrants. A few folks were convinced it was for surveillance. I found asking simple, specific questions worked best, like which company would be installing the spy gear. When they couldn't name one, the theory lost steam pretty quickly.
