I used to think the whole 'birds aren't real' thing was just a joke

For a year, I laughed it off as a silly meme. Then I watched a documentary about the actual decline of native bird populations in North America, which has dropped by almost 30% since 1970. The data showed a real, documented replacement with drones for surveillance in some urban areas. It made me realize the joke was built on a tiny, twisted kernel of truth about surveillance tech. Has anyone else had a conspiracy theory joke suddenly feel a bit less funny?

Honestly, that reminds me of when I saw a weirdly still pigeon on a power line that didn't move for hours, even in the wind. Tbh it was probably just sick or something, but it gave me the creeps for a solid week.

Yeah that "didn't move for hours" thing gets me. I always figured birds were just doing bird stuff, but seeing one totally frozen like that makes you realize how much they're usually fidgeting. Now I can't unsee it when they act off.

Casey342's pigeon story hits different now.
