My favorite chalk line reel shattered at 30 feet up

I was marking layout lines on a second-story deck in Austin last Tuesday when the housing cracked and the whole spool went flying. Got a replacement chalk line from my truck but lost 20 minutes and had to re-snap every line twice. Anyone else had a basic tool fail at the worst possible moment, or do you carry a backup for the small stuff?

Two words: laser level." That's it? No chalk dust, no snapping strings, no cleaning up powder? Man, I've been using chalk lines for fifteen years. Never even touched a laser level. How do you use it outside in bright sun? I heard those things are useless unless it's dark. Guess I'm old school. But if it really works, maybe I should borrow one before I buy.
