The cheap plastic chalk line snapped mid-layout on a foundation pour

It happened Tuesday morning on a new build site in Tempe. I was snapping a 40-foot line for the footer and the reel just popped out, spilling blue chalk everywhere. I had to stop the whole crew for 15 minutes while I taped the line to a board and eyeballed it. Has anyone found a chalk line that can actually handle daily use without falling apart?

That's the worst feeling, especially with a crew waiting. Those cheap plastic reels are basically built to fail. A good metal one is worth the extra cash for sure.

Even worse when the plastic shards get into the line and ruin your whole spool.

My buddy's Penn reel lasted 20 years, @the_leo.
