He told me he ditched his tent for a simple tarp and bivvy setup after the first week, saving like 2 pounds. We sat on a log for 20 minutes while he showed me how he rigs it with just trekking poles. Has anyone else tried a minimalist shelter like that for longer routes?

I keep hearing people say you gotta separate the point and flat before smoking. But I found something at the 2023 American Royal meat science symposium that said keeping them together actually retains 15% more moisture. I tried it on my last 3 briskets from Creekstone Farms. The wool cost about $80 more, but after trying to work with both, the difference was huge. The tech stuff looked cool but felt weird to cut and sew, while the wool just fell into place and held the shape I wanted. Has anyone else found that sometimes the old school materials just work better for certain pieces?
