Update: I hand nailed every rafter for 12 years, switched to a framing nailer, and now I am not sure it was the right call
For 12 years I hand nailed every rafter and stud on my jobs, mostly because my old boss in Dayton kept saying a nail gun makes guys sloppy. Last spring I finally bought a framing nailer and my framing time on a 30x40 shop dropped from 4 days to about a day and a half, so the speed part is not even close. But now I am second guessing the tradeoff, because I have had 3 callbacks on this one build where nails were sunk too deep or shot at a bad angle, and I never had that problem with a hammer. The old guys say a nailer is fine if you slow down and check your depth setting, while the younger crew I run says I am nuts and hand nailing is just wasted labor. So who is right here, is a framing nailer really a net win once you factor in callbacks, or did I just get lazy with my settings and my trigger finger?
