Hot take: posting your price list on Instagram is hurting newer stylists, not helping them
A newer stylist I share a booth with in Portland told me last Tuesday that she posts her full price list on Instagram because a business coach told her it builds trust, and she has had 3 people haggle with her in the chair since. I think that advice is backwards for anyone just starting out. When I opened my books at 10 clients a day back in 2019, I never posted numbers, I posted the work and let people ask. Charging by the hour instead of by the service got me out of the haggle trap years ago, and my average ticket went up around $35 per client once I made that switch. People book a person they trust, not a menu, and a price list just turns your chair into a drive thru. If a client asks what a cut costs, I quote a range and tell them it depends on density and length, which is the truth anyway. Anyone here still posting full prices, and how do you handle the pushback when someone screenshots it and argues in your DMs?
