I tried mixing my own cuticle oil for 14 clients, and the cheap batch got the most requests
I made three batches last month using grapeseed, jojoba, and a pre-made blend, and the $6 grapeseed one is the only one clients keep asking me to order again. The fancy blend sat there mostly untouched while people kept commenting on how their nails felt after the simple one. Has anyone else noticed clients respond more to the cheap stuff, or is it just my little corner of Knoxville?
Oh man this is so real and it drives me nuts in the best way. I run a tiny studio out of my spare room and I did almost the exact same test last winter, jojoba, sweet almond, and some $22 "botanical repair" oil a rep talked me into, and you know which one people lost their minds over? The sweet almond that cost me like four bucks for a big bottle at the grocery store. My clients kept saying their cuticles felt softer and their polish lasted longer, and I swear it was just because the cheap stuff soaks in faster and doesn't sit greasy on the skin. The expensive one looked pretty on the shelf and smelled fancy but it just kind of sat there. I ended up keeping the pricey one for myself and using the almond for everyone else, which feels backwards but the feedback does not lie. There is something about simple oils doing the actual job while the blends with ten ingredients are mostly marketing.
