Tried Demi-permanent over permanent for a color correction last month... night and day difference

I spent 3 hours fixing a hot roots disaster on a client from Seattle after she used box dye, and the demi-permanent blend blended the line way smoother than my usual permanent formula would have. The result was so much more natural with zero banding, even on the second application. Anyone else switch between the two based on the situation or are you loyal to one type?

Zero banding" is the dream right there. I once tried to fix my own roots with box dye and ended up looking like I had a reverse skunk stripe. Took a pro two sessions to sort it out and I still tip my hat any time I see a smooth blend.

I just watched this Aveda colorist on YouTube break down why root blending is so hard for DIY. She said the biggest mistake is not using a finer brush to really thread the color through the part lines. She also pointed out that most box dyes are one formula, but real blending needs a slightly lighter tone at the roots to match the midlengths. It makes sense why your pro had to do two sessions, that kind of layering takes experience.

Is it really that serious? I mean, it's hair dye, not brain surgery.
