Watched a colorist at a Vegas trade show fix a botched bleach job in 20 minutes, and it made me rethink my whole consultation
I was at a hair show in Vegas last spring, mostly to look at shears I couldn't afford, and I wandered into a live demo booth where a colorist was working on a model with a really bad bleach job, orange bands all over the mid lengths. What got me was not the foil work, it was the 15 minutes she spent before she touched a single strand, just asking questions and looking at the hair under different light. She said out loud, 'I don't touch anyone's color until I know what they did at home for the last 6 months,' and that line stuck with me. I used to think I was good at consults, but sitting there I realized I was mostly just nodding and writing down formulas. Since then I started asking about water softness, old box dye, and how often they heat style, and my redo rate has dropped a lot over about 4 months. A client last month even told me the consult felt like a doctor's visit, which I took as a compliment. Do you all do a real hair history sit down, or is it mostly eyeball it and start mixing?
