Paid $35 for a 6 month meetup subscription and it paid off
I thought meetups were just networking fluff but there's one near me in Austin that does skill shares every other Friday. After 3 sessions I picked up 2 recurring clients from other freelancers who overheard my pitch. Anyone else found a good group that actually leads to work or am I just lucky?

The one that worked for me was a small design meetup that capped attendance at like 15 people. We did live portfolio reviews and someone there passed my name to their old boss. Took about 4 months of showing up regularly before I saw real work from it. Sounds like you found the right kind of group, not all of them have that mix of freelancers and people who actually hire.

Live portfolio reviews" is doing the heavy lifting there honestly @michael803, I once went to a meetup like that and froze so bad I just pointed at a picture of my dog instead of my actual work. Still got a client out of it somehow, which says more about their taste than my nerves lol. But yeah, the 15 person cap is key, bigger groups turn into a wall of noise where nobody remembers who you are. Four months of showing up regularly is also a flex, I usually bail after two weeks when I decide my social battery is a phone from 2007. That mix of freelancers and actual hirers is rare though, most groups are just freelancers low key fishing for referrals from each other.
