TIL my old library had a free room you could just book, and that was my first "coworking" spot back in 2019
Back in 2019 I was freelancing out of my one bedroom place in Portland and losing my mind, so I started walking to the public library on Belmont just to be around people. They had a study room you could reserve for 2 hours, no cost, no card, you just walked up to the desk and asked. I did that every Tuesday and Thursday for like 8 months and honestly it worked better than any cafe because nobody cared what I was doing and the wifi actually held up. Fast forward to last month and I finally joined a real coworking spot downtown, $220 a month, and the weird thing is the best part isn't the desks or the coffee, it's that someone says hey when you walk in. The library never had that, you sat alone in a glass box, but at least you felt like part of a place. I miss how simple it was, just show up and nobody asks you to join a Slack channel or do a standup. Now I'm wondering if I'm paying 220 bucks for a feeling I could get for free, or if the community part is actually worth it. Did anyone here start out in libraries or cafes before making the jump to a real space?
