Warning: I joined a coworking spot in Portland just for the wifi and ended up in a weekly lunch crew
I signed up at a place on SE Division for $175 a month thinking I'd just use the desk and leave, but by week 2 I was eating tacos every Tuesday with the same 4 people. Now I get more work from those lunches than from anything online, so what's the weirdest way a shared office led to actual paying gigs for you?
The "eating tacos every Tuesday with the same 4 people" part is what got me. I had almost the same thing happen at a spot in Austin, except it was Thursday bagels. I started going just for the cheap desk and fast wifi, but I kept showing up to the same little group because it was honestly the best part of my week. One guy in that group ran a small design shop and needed someone to write copy for a client site, and that turned into about six months of steady work. The weird part is I never once pitched myself or handed out a card. It came from just being a regular face who showed up every week and talked like a normal person. So yeah, the lunches are the whole point, not the wifi.
