Rant: had a load swing on me in Tacoma and the tagline brake was the last thing I checked
Last Tuesday I was setting a 4,200 lb AC unit on a roof in Tacoma and the load started drifting left about 3 feet off the deck. Wind was only maybe 8 mph so I knew it wasn't that. I stopped the hoist, let it settle, and found the tagline guy had let his rope go slack while he took a phone call. What actually bit me was the swing brake on the slew was grabbing late, so tiny corrections turned into a slow drift I couldn't feel from the cab. I pulled the load back, set it down, and had a 5 minute talk with the crew about holding the line no matter what. Took me 20 more minutes to finish the pick but nothing got wrecked. Anyone else had a slew brake get lazy on them without throwing a code?

Man, that slow drift you can't feel from the cab is the worst kind of gremlin. Had the same thing happen to me a couple years back on a tilt-up job, and what saved me was just slowing everything way down before the pick. I started doing a dry run on the swing every morning, no load, just to feel where the brake grabs. If it lags even a little, I note it and keep my moves tiny for the rest of the day. The other thing that helped was telling my guy on the tagline to just drop the rope on the ground if his phone rang, instead of holding it half slack. Sounds dumb but it fixed the problem. Also check your brake fluid and pads if you haven't, mine was low fluid and it never threw a light.
