He told me to skip the math and just use the 80% rule for a 28-ton pick last Tuesday, and I nearly tipped the 250. Has anyone else gotten burned by those old-timer formulas that only work on specific setups?

My uncle ran a rig for thirty years and swore the same shortcut, but he also drove with the outriggers half up once and blamed the ground for being soft. That load chart math is there for a reason, even if it feels like homework when you are tired and the client is breathing down your neck. A tape measure and sliding scale never hurt nobody, but a five minute pencil check beats a bent boom every time.
