Used to hand signal every blind pick, now I run radios and my hands are shot
Back when I started operating in 2009, I did every blind pick with hand signals because that was just how the old guys on the crew taught me. I'd stand out there in the wind for 30 minutes waving my arms while the oiler relayed everything by shouting, and half the time the load drifted anyway. About 4 years ago my knees and shoulders started barking at me, so I finally bought a set of cheap two way radios with throat mics for like $140. Now I can talk the load in from the cab or the ground and my body doesn't pay for it the next morning. The thing that bugs me is new guys coming up never learn the hand signals at all, so when a radio dies on a job in the rain nobody knows what to do. Do you all still drill hand signals on your crews or is that just gone now?
