My writing group gave me 12 prompt cards in 2020 and I still have 3 left
Back in 2020 my writing group in Duluth swapped homemade prompt cards before everything shut down. I got 12 of them and told myself I would write one story per card. I finished 9. The funny part is that the 3 I skipped are all the same kind of prompt, the ones that say write about a smell or a sound from childhood. Last week I pulled them out again and wrote a 400 word story about a screen door slamming at my grandma's house in under an hour. So the cards did not fail me, I just avoided them for four years. Has anyone else noticed that the prompts people skip say way more about them than the ones they pick?
Does the type of prompt you skip maybe match how your brain works when you write? I ask because smell and sound prompts force you to work from memory, not from made up stuff. Some people write best when they can build a scene from scratch, and pulling up an old memory means you have to sit in feelings you may not want to visit on a Tuesday. So the skipped cards might not be about fear, they might just be about which way your imagination runs. Either way, the screen door story sounds like it had been waiting for you.
