Update: my flash fiction went from 900 words to 300 in 6 weeks and the prompts did it, but I miss the mess
Six weeks ago I was writing 900 word flash pieces and every single one felt bloated. Then I started doing one prompt a day, just 20 minutes on a timer, and last Tuesday I finished a story in 280 words that I actually liked. The weird part is my old 900 word stuff had scenes I loved that never make the cut now, and I keep wondering if I'm getting sharper or just cutting the good stuff. My writing group in Sacramento split right down the middle on it last meeting. Half said tight is better, half said I'm sanding off everything that made my voice mine. So which side are you on, do short prompts make you a better writer or just a faster one?
