Rant: My biggest client paid me with a check that bounced in 2018

I was in my apartment in Charlotte, about to pay rent, when my bank called to say the $4,200 check from a long-term design client was no good. I had to take a small loan from my dad to cover bills while I spent three months in small claims court to get my money. Has anyone else had to chase down a bad check, and what's your cutoff for demanding a different payment method now?

I keep seeing people put 'work for hire' in contracts without knowing what it means

Just read a contract from a new customer that said 'work for hire' but then listed a bunch of rules about how I couldn't use the work in my portfolio. That's not how that works at all. A real work for hire clause means they own everything from the start, but I can still usually show it off unless we say otherwise. I've had to explain this three times this month alone. It matters because if you sign a bad one, you could lose rights you didn't mean to give up. Has anyone else run into this mix-up lately?

Update: I thought being super nice was the only way to handle a difficult client, but a freelancer in Seattle told me she lost a $5k project because she was too agreeable and didn't set clear rules from the start.

Has anyone else found that being too flexible actually makes a bad situation worse, and what's a good first step to setting those boundaries without sounding mean?

TIL our book club kept missing the point of 'The Great Gatsby' because we focused on the wrong character.

We spent 45 minutes last month arguing if Gatsby was a good guy, but my English teacher friend said the real debate is about Nick's unreliable narration and how it changes the whole story. I reread the first chapter and now I see all the clues we skipped. Has your club ever had a big fight because you were looking at a book the wrong way?

Hot take: Skipping the dryer made my tiny home work better

I quit using a dryer after my move to a tiny house. The appliance took up too much room and cost a lot to run. Now I dry my clothes on a folding rack I keep in a closet. My power bill is lower, which helps with my tight budget. Items like jeans and shirts last longer without the heat. It did take some time to get used to the extra step. My small space just functions smoother without that big machine.
