My credit score dropped 40 points because of a library card I forgot I had
Back in March I opened a library card to borrow some audiobooks for the crew truck, but apparently they ran my credit and I never even thought about it. Fast forward to last week when I checked my score and saw a hard inquiry I didn't recognize, turns out that library system reports to all three bureaus. Has anyone else had random stuff like this hit their credit out of nowhere?

The 40 point drop is rough but honestly I'd be more worried about what else that library system has access to since some of them link to your driver's license or other state IDs through their verification process. Might be worth checking if they're sharing data with anyone else.

Are we sure the library is the one doing the damage though? Most library systems I've seen use those verification checks just to confirm residency, not to run a hard pull on your credit. I've had a library card for years and my credit has been fine even after getting one that asked for my ID. Plus libraries are usually pretty strict about data sharing since they're government funded or tied to public records laws. If you had a drop, it might be something else in your file that happens to line up with the timing.

Honestly, I heard some places like libraries and even gyms do this now and it's wild. Tbh, I didn't know a library card could mess with your credit like that.
