Can we talk about charging for discovery calls?

The $75 fee is a genius move, I started doing a $50 deposit after someone booked three calls with zero follow through and it saved my sanity. The paid consult filter is real, my conversion rate actually went up when I started charging.

Had a client rewrite my entire design brief 2 days before deadline last week

wait did you actually explain to them that a 40-page brand guide needs more than just swapping out a few words and hitting print? because i feel like some clients genuinely don't understand how much work goes into these things until you spell it out for them. i've had a similar situation where a client wanted to change the entire color palette three days before launch and i just had to sit them down and walk through every single page that would need to be redone. it's exhausting having to educate people on basic project management when you're already on a tight deadline.

Overheard a homeowner say carpet is 'easy DIY'

Did they mention if the subfloor was level? Because that's where the real fun starts. I've torn out more wavy carpet than I can count.

Heard a client say "your rate is too high" then hired a cheaper guy. That guy went under. Now they're back. Do you hold firm or raise it?

FOUR months later they came crawling back to me, asking if I still had room in my schedule. @casey268 it's honestly SHOCKING how some people will burn through three different contractors before realizing the cheap route costs them more in the long run. I held firm on my original rate and told them I'd need a 15% deposit upfront this time. They actually signed without blinking, which just proves they learned their lesson the HARD way. Sometimes you gotta let people fail on their own to really appreciate what you bring to the table.

Just learned that fungus on lens elements can actually etch the glass if left long enough...

Nah. I've never had fungus damage a lens that bad.
