My debit card got hit for $87 at a gas pump in Fresno and my bank said it was my fault
Something went sideways on me about 10 days ago. I filled up at a station off Highway 99 in Fresno and the next morning my checking account was short $87. I called my bank right away and they said since I used my PIN at the pump, they treat it like I approved the charge. I filed a dispute anyway and they sent me a letter saying it was denied. Now I am stuck because I need that money for rent and I do not know if a credit union would treat me any different. Has anyone fought a denied debit dispute and actually won, or am I just out the cash?
Cards at the pump get skimmed all the time and the skimmer grabs your PIN when you type it, so the bank acting like you handed your money over is backwards. Here is the angle nobody brings up. That pump has to meet rules for card security, and if the station skipped upgrades, the cost can fall on them, not you. Ask the bank for the transaction log, the pump number, and the exact time, then file a complaint with the state agency that watches gas station scales and card readers. Also check if that station is a franchise, because corporate might settle just to make it go away.
