Paid a $35 annual fee for three years before I finally called and got it waived

I just called my credit card company and asked nicely if they could remove the fee this year, and they did it in two minutes - has anyone else had luck getting fees dropped just by asking?

Three years is a long time to let that slide, honestly. My Capital One card had a $95 annual fee and I called the first year they hit me with it, got it waived on the spot. But if you already paid it for three years in a row without saying a word, they probably figured you were fine with it. Most companies will drop fees if you push back, but you gotta do it before they take your money, not after.

Funny you say that @alext52, but not everyone has the same luck with retention offers. I called AmEx two years straight trying to get my annual fee dropped and they basically laughed at me both times. Some companies are way more aggressive about fees now because they know people will just complain online but keep the card anyway. Paying for three years might actually be a good move if the card has solid perks that justify the cost, not every fee is negotiable just because you ask nicely.

Start by calling them out on the bluff. Ive had the same luck with AmEx they dont budge if you already paid. Capital One is way more flexible because theyre fighting for customers. AmEx knows people will keep the card for the status alone.
