I thought using a password manager was just extra hassle until my bank account got hit

For years I just used a few simple passwords for everything and thought a manager was overkill. Then six months ago, someone got into my bank and took $2,500 because I reused a password from a breached site. My IT friend in Austin showed me how a manager creates and stores a unique, complex password for every single site. Now I see it's the most basic security step, not a nice-to-have. Has anyone else had a close call that finally made them switch to one?

That line about it being "the most basic security step" hits hard. I see this same pattern with people skipping backups until their hard drive dies, or ignoring two-factor until their Instagram gets stolen. We treat the boring, quiet protections as optional until the loud, expensive disaster makes the choice for us.

Why do we only learn from the big, loud mistakes?

Setting up automatic weekly backups changed everything for me... it's the small, quiet habit that keeps the loud disasters away. The system just runs in the background now without me having to remember. It took one close call to finally make it a routine.
