My old password plan was 'password123' for everything, and it finally caught up with me
About two years ago, my old gaming account got hacked because I used the same easy password on a sketchy fan site. I lost all my progress and had to start over. Now I use a password manager and make every password a long, random string of letters and numbers. It took me a full afternoon to set up, but now I only have to remember one master phrase. Has anyone else had a bad hack that made them finally get serious about passwords?

Totally get that sinking feeling @faithpatel described. Setting up the manager was a pain, but now I make my passwords like 20 random characters. The real win was turning on two-factor auth everywhere it's offered, which adds another lock on the door.

My Steam account got taken over in 2020 after a data breach on some forum. They traded away all my good TF2 items. Switching to a password manager felt like a huge chore, but that sinking feeling of losing your stuff is way worse.
