Stopped a virus with just updates, no extra programs needed

Everyone says you must have antivirus, but I think that's overkill. I keep everything patched and avoid shady sites. That blocked a nasty script from running on my machine.

Avoiding shady sites worked for my friend too until his kid downloaded a game from some random forum. Windows defender caught it but he still had to wipe the whole drive.

I made separate accounts for my kids to limit what they can do on the computer. This stops bad downloads from getting full access to the system. It's a simple step that saved me from wiping drives.

Setting up a guest account saved my laptop last month.

My old roommate in college swore by just one admin account for everything, said it was easier. Then his whole thesis draft got locked by ransomware from a bad email link. Watching him have to explain that to our professor made me set up separate accounts on my own machine the next day. It feels like a small hassle but it really does wall off the worst of the damage. I don't know why I ever argued with him about it.
