Update: that QR code on the parking meter in Dayton got me for $88
Pulled up to a meter near the Oregon District and there was a QR sticker slapped right over the real one, looked legit enough. It sent me to a payment page that took my card and "confirmed" my spot. Two hours later the city ticketed my car anyway, and my bank flagged the charge as fraud the next morning. $88 gone plus a $40 ticket, all because I never checked if the meter had its own sticker already. Now I yank on the sticker before scanning anything, if it peels easy it is fake. How many of you actually check the URL after scanning one of these?
Good thing you caught it before your card got drained for real, that sticker scam is getting out of hand. And honestly, who checks the URL? I barely read the thing, I just scan and tap like the meter owes me money. The peel test is smart though, those stickers are probably slapped on there by some dude with a sheet of them and a dream. Feels like every new "convenient" pay system is just a new way for someone to rob me for $88 plus a $40 kick in the teeth. City probably loves it too, they get their ticket money either way. Next time I park I'm bringing cash and a screwdriver, no QR code is beating me twice.
