The deadline flip that cost me a weekend in Tulsa last month
Got a call at 4pm on a Friday from a regular gig, said the whole project was due Monday instead of the following Friday. No warning, no sorry, just 'we need it sooner' like that was normal. I had already booked Saturday to see my sister, so I ate the ticket cost, about $90, and pulled two all-nighters. The worst part is I found out later the real reason was their lead person was going on vacation, not any actual client demand. Has anyone else had a deadline moved just because someone inside the company couldn't plan ahead?
Ugh, that is such a gut punch. But here’s the thing nobody mentions: that $90 ticket was probably the cheapest part of it. You lost two nights of sleep and probably used up all your patience for the month, and they will never, ever see that as a cost on their end. Next time, maybe just say you’re unavailable and let them deal with the mess, because they’re clearly just betting on you folding.
