My dentist pushed implants, my old school guy said crowns, and 4 yrs later I know who was right
Four years ago I cracked a molar on a popcorn kernel and got two totally different answers from two dentists here in Boise. The younger guy with the fancy office quoted me $4,800 for an implant and said crowns on cracked teeth always fail eventually. The older dentist two blocks over said a crown would run me $1,100 and last me a long time if I quit chewing ice. Everyone online acts like implants are always the smart money, and I almost went that way because the first guy talked like it wasn't even a choice. I went with the crown anyway, mostly because I didn't have five grand sitting around. It's been 48 months now, two cleanings a year, and my bite feels exactly the same as day one. The old guy also told me the implant pitch is partly because a crown pays a dentist once while an implant plus the crown on top pays them twice. I'm not saying implants are a scam, plenty of people truly need them, but the way it gets sold as the only real option bugs me. Has anyone else had a plain crown outlast what they were told it would?
