Debate: Should we pre-fill screw dimples or let the finisher handle it?

I've been installing drywall in Phoenix for about 8 years now. On a garage job last month I pre-filled every single dimple before the finisher showed up, and he said it saved him 2 hours. But my old foreman always said never touch the mud because finishers have their own system and you'll mess up their process. What do you guys do on commercial jobs where time is money?

Debate: Client feedback made me ditch my portfolio format

Had a client last month say my samples looked 'too clean' and asked for rougher drafts. Half of me thinks they're right - shows the process. Other half says clients should judge finished work not scraps. What do you all think? Does showing your messy work actually help land gigs?

Skeptical about pre-ferments for bread until I tried a poolish after 3 separate bakery visits

I thought it was just extra work for no payoff but my crust got that deep blistered crunch and the crumb opened up way more than my straight doughs ever did, has anyone else noticed a real difference switching to a cold overnight preferment?

Swapped manual data entry for AI scraping and cut my weekly review time from 8 hours to 45 minutes.

I used to copy and paste supplier pricing from 12 different Excel sheets into one master file every Wednesday. That took me pretty much a full workday. I started using a Python script with an AI parser back in February to grab and clean the data automatically. Has anyone else found a specific tool that works better for merging messy spreadsheet formats?

PSA: That $150 Park Tool cable cutter I bought snapped on the third use

I'm usually a buy once cry once guy. Figured spending big on a Park Tool CN-10 would save me hassle over the cheap $20 cutters from Amazon. Well 3 months later the jaw chipped on a standard shift cable. Took it back to the dealer in Portland and they said it wasn't covered because it's a wear item. $150 down the drain. Meanwhile my buddy's been using the same $15 amazon specials for 2 years. Anyone else had this happen or did I just get a dud?

Had to choose between a cheap torque wrench and a Snap-on last minute

So I'm at the hangar at 6 AM last Saturday, my old wrench finally gave up the ghost after 8 years. I had a $89 option from the parts store or drop $450 on a Snap-on right then. I cheaped out and grabbed the budget one, thought I'd save cash. By noon I was chasing a loose bolt on a landing gear panel because the thing clicked way too early, had to redo the whole job and borrow a coworker's wrench. Anybody else ever regret saving a few bucks on tools in a pinch?

My "Productive" Morning Routine Ended With a Pigeon in My Living Room Last Tuesday

I had this whole plan to beat burnout by waking up at 5 AM and doing deep work before client calls. By 6:30 AM I had brewed coffee and opened my laptop, feeling GREAT. Then a pigeon flew right in through my open kitchen window and started pacing on my keyboard. I spent the next 45 minutes chasing it with a broom and missing a deadline for a $200 logo draft. Has anyone else had a supposedly relaxing system blow up in a weird way?

Pro tip: stop using those cheap plastic post hole diggers from Home Depot

Broke my third one last month on a job in Austin, and it finally hit me that I've been wasting money on the wrong tool. My buddy Ron showed up with his old school steel digger from the 80s and finished my holes in half the time. Anybody else ditch the plastic handles for good and never look back?

The $175 home inspection that saved me $4,000

Bought my first house three months ago in Austin. The inspector found a small crack in the foundation that the seller tried to hide behind a heavy rug. Got a structural engineer to look at it for $350 and he said it needed piering. Seller ended up covering the whole repair cost because I had the inspection report. Anyone else have a home inspection catch something big like that?

My scale printed the same dimension 3 times before I caught it

Was laying out a floor plan for a 2,400 sq ft house yesterday and my scale was showing me 1/4 inch = 1 foot on the ruler but the print came out at 1/8 inch. Spent 45 minutes rechecking my layers and PDF settings before my coworker pointed out I had a custom scale saved from a previous job. Anyone else accidentally leave a weird scale setting on and ruin a morning?
