A turbo oil feed line blew on a 6.7 Powerstroke in the middle of nowhere

I was on a service call for a broken down dump truck on a back road near Redding. The driver said he heard a loud pop and lost power. When I got under it, I saw the braided line to the turbo had split right at the fitting, dumping oil everywhere. I had to cut the bad section off, flare a new end, and use a spare compression fitting from my kit to get it sealed up enough to drive to the shop. Has anyone found a better fix for that specific line when you're stuck without the exact part?

I always carried the exact replacement line, but your fix is smarter for the field. A good flare and compression fitting can be a real life saver when you're miles out. I keep a small tubing kit in my truck now because of stories like this.

Just to clarify, a compression fitting shouldn't be used on brake lines. They're not made for that kind of pressure and can fail. A proper double flare is the only safe field repair for brake tubing.

Jamie's point about a compression fitting being a lifesaver is exactly why it's risky. They can hold for a while and feel like a good fix, but that's what makes them dangerous when they let go later. The double flare is a pain, but it's the only one you can actually trust.

Seems like people get too worked up about this stuff.
