My old shop teacher in Dayton said to torque by feel on small bolts and I finally get why
I argued with him back in 2019 but after snapping 3 valve cover bolts on a 5.9 Cummins last week I ate my words. Anyone else got a case where the old guys were right and you were too stubborn to see it?

Did you laugh at him too or just argue? I did both and now I feel like a clown. I was Mr. torque wrench on everything back then, even little 10mm stuff, and my buddy kept saying just snug it and stop being scared of the wrench. Snapped two bolts on my valve cover gasket job and spent a whole Saturday drilling one out, which was way worse than just listening in the first place. Old dudes learned on stuff they could not afford to break, so their hands know when to stop. I still use the wrench on head bolts and anything that matters, but on small stuff I go by feel now and somehow nothing has blown up yet.
