Ngl I was torquing head bolts dry for 3 years until a guy in Amarillo showed me his thread gauge | Diesel Mechanics - Freelance Forum - The Community for Independent Professionals
My uncle worked at a shop in Lubbock for 12 years and he swore by putting a dab of oil on every single head bolt before torque. Said he learned it from an old timer who built race engines. Turns out that old timer was right, because oil changes the torque reading by like 20 percent compared to dry. I always wondered why my torque wrench felt like it was fighting me on some motors. Never thought to check the threads themselves though, that thread gauge tip is a good one.
