That old timer at Speedco showed me a valve lash trick I never saw

He set the exhaust lash with the engine warm and a feeler gauge bent at 45 degrees, said it saves him 20 minutes per head on an ISX. Anyone else run lash that way or stick to the book cold specs?

Hang on, is saving 20 minutes on a valve lash really that big of a deal, or is this just an old guy who likes his trick? I mean, I get being fast, but on an ISX I'd rather take the extra time and know the clearance is dead on, especially cold. A bent feeler gauge at 45 degrees sounds like a good way to get a false reading if you're not careful, and then you're chasing a tick later. Seems like the kind of shortcut that works great until it doesn't, if you know what I mean.
