Client told me my keyword research was too broad, it stung but she was right

Last month a client with a small ecommerce store sent back my keyword list and said it looked like I copied it from a generic template. She pointed out that I had terms like "best running shoes" when her shop only sold trail running gear for narrow feet. I switched to long tail phrases tied to her exact products and her traffic doubled in three weeks. Anyone else had a client tell you something that made you totally redo your approach?

Bought a $40 'eco-friendly' bamboo compostable phone case and it started falling apart after 3 months

Now I'm stuck with a flimsy case that sheds bits of bamboo into my pocket and cost me twice what a normal case would, has anyone found a phone case that actually lasts without being plastic?

That day I installed 14 rooms of carpet and the padding fight almost broke me

Just finishing up a job in a new subdivision near Phoenix. Builder wanted us to do 14 rooms in one day. We had a crew of three and started at 6 AM. By noon we realized the homeowner ordered a different pad than what the builder spec'd. Got a call from the builder yelling about the cost difference. Took 45 minutes on the phone to sort it out. Then one of my guys cut his hand on a tack strip and we lost another hour. Still finished by 9 PM. Everyone was beat but the client tipped us $40 each. Anyone else have a job where the padding caused more headaches than the carpet itself?

Stumbled on a tree growing straight out of a chimney in downtown Portland

I was walking to a job site last Tuesday near Powell Blvd and looked up at this old brick building. There was a full grown maple tree, maybe 15 feet tall, sticking out of a chimney on the roof. Someone must have left it uncovered for years and a seed just landed there. The roots were probably snaking down through the whole flue. I stood there for a good 5 minutes just staring at it. My buddy laughed and said that tree has more success than half the saplings we plant. Has anyone else seen something like that in a weird spot?

Caught myself impulse buying $45 worth of fancy pasta sauce at a farmers market last weekend

I was at the downtown Portland farmers market and almost dropped $45 on three jars of small-batch tomato sauce because the vendor was really good at talking. Then I remembered I had a can of crushed tomatoes at home that costs $1.50 and makes the same thing. Has anyone else talked themselves out of a stupid food purchase like that?

An apprentice in Tacoma showed me a trick with wire nuts I'd never seen

I was working a commercial job over in Tacoma last spring, and this kid fresh out of trade school was helping me on a panel swap. He was putting wire nuts on and using this little twist with his fingers to seat them tighter, not just spinning them on. I'd been doing this 12 years and never thought to do it that way. Has anyone else picked up a simple habit from a green apprentice that just stuck with you?

Finally tried reading digital vs floppy and one won by a mile

I spent years buying single issues from my local shop, but after my 3-month backlog got out of hand I grabbed a tablet and read a run of Saga on it. The convenience of having 40 issues in one place without bagging and boarding anything just felt better to me. Has anyone else switched formats and found one side works way better for their habits?

Just realized half the guys on site don't know how to read a slump cone right

I was on a driveway pour last Tuesday in Phoenix and watched three different finishers grab a sample from the same truck. One said 4 inches, another said 5, and the third called it 3.5. How hard is it to set the cone on level ground, lift it straight up, and actually measure from the high point? Are people skipping the basics now or am I just getting old and grumpy about it? Any others notice this slipping lately?

I finally tried planting a small clover patch instead of grass.

Put down a $20 bag of microclover seed in a 10x10 foot area last spring. It's way softer underfoot and I haven't mowed it once. Anyone know if it'll handle a dog running on it?

That 'freeze test' for shutter speeds I laughed at actually works

Used to be one of those guys that said "just buy a shutter timer" every time someone brought that trick up. Bought a beat up Nikon F2 with a sticky slow speeds last year, forgot my timer at home, tried the phone trick out of desperation. Felt like an idiot when it worked perfectly, matched the timer down to the frame. Saves me from dragging my whole toolbox out for a quick check on cameras I'm not sure about. Kinda hate that such a simple thing works better than I gave it credit for, but whatever, it's useful.
