Decided to post my WIP after hating sketch dumps for years

I used to roll my eyes at those daily sketch dump posts, figured they were just clutter with no story. Then last week I saw a thread where someone showed a rough drawing next to the finished piece, and the comments were all asking about their process. It made me realize people actually want to see the messy middle, not just the polished result. So I threw up a 3 step progression of a character I've been drawing, from rough lines to color, and got way more feedback in a day than my finished posts get in a week. Has anyone else found that showing the unfinished steps gets better engagement than final work alone?

That tracks with my experience too. Posting the rough version first was the turning point for me. People stopped treating my art like a finished product and started asking questions about choices I made, like why I kept a messy line or changed a color halfway through. The comments become a conversation instead of just a bunch of likes. Finished pieces are for showing off, but the process stuff is where people actually learn something or feel like they're in on the secret. Now I usually post a rough or a step halfway through before I even finish the final version. It takes some getting used to, but the engagement is way more useful for figuring out what works.
