Ran into an artist at a local gallery who showed me her sketch notes

I was at a small gallery show in Portland last month and this woman next to me was scribbling in a tiny notebook. I peeked over and she had drawn little diagrams of the paintings on display with notes about the color blends. She told me she does this at every show she visits to remember what actually worked. It made me rethink how I save references for my own digital pieces. Has anyone else tried sketching out real art they see as study notes?

Building off what you said about memory, I started doing this with street art I see around my neighborhood. Instead of just snapping a pic of a mural and scrolling past it later, I pull out a cheap spiral notebook and do a quick 2 minute sketch with color pencil notes. Last week I drew a fence piece that had this weird orange and purple fade. Now when I walk past the actual spot, I remember exactly how the artist layered those colors because my hand went through the motion of trying to copy it. It's like your fingers learn the stuff your eyes miss.

Read this thing online about how memory works and how writing stuff down by hand is way better than taking photos. Something about the brain processing information differently when you draw or write compared to just snapping a picture. Idk maybe it's just me but I can barely remember a painting I saw last week if I just took a photo of it. But if I sketched even a rough outline and jotted down a few notes I bet it would stick with me way longer. I mean think about how much more you notice when you actually study something with a pen in your hand versus just glancing at it through a phone screen.

Test it out yourself, @sandra_moore30 is proof enough for me.
