I finally saw my old home office turn into a stranger's kitchen on Airbnb

Back in April I went back to Lisbon after 11 months away and paid to stay in the apartment I used to rent, which I'd sublet through Airbnb. The owner had remodeled everything, so my old desk spot was now a breakfast nook with a juicer, and I kept looking for my spare key in a drawer that no longer existed. Has anyone else gone back to a place they lived and felt like a tourist in their own history, or is that just me?

The juicer got me, that's such a specific detail that makes it feel like a stranger really took over your life. I did something similar with my first college apartment, and the new tenant had painted over the weird stain on the wall that I used to stare at while studying. It's weird how those small changes hit harder than the big remodel stuff, like the past you left behind got erased without asking.
