Hot take: I ignored a soft spot in my subfloor for 8 months and it cost me $640
Back in April I noticed a spongy spot about a foot wide in front of the bathroom door, right where the toilet overflows had soaked in probably twice. I told myself it was just the old vinyl flexing and laid a rug over it. Last Tuesday my heel went through it while carrying a laundry basket, and the basket went into the hall closet. Pulled the vinyl up and the plywood was dark and crumbly down to the joist, soft for about 3 feet along that wall. Three trips to the lumber yard and $640 later, I had new subfloor, a new toilet flange, and a lesson in looking under rugs. Anyone got a trick for spotting soft spots before they become a hole, or do you just walk around poking with a screwdriver like I should have?
