Saw a 1920s bungalow in Portland with original fir floors, but the guy painted over them
Walked through an open house on NE Alberta and the seller slathered gray paint right over 100 year old tongue and groove. Is it possible to strip that stuff back down without ruining the wood, or should I just walk away from this one?
You said they "slathered gray paint right over 100 year old tongue and groove" but a lot of flippers do that to hide damage, and paint can actually protect old fir from wear. In my experience paint on a floor that old is often a red flag, not a green light, because it usually means the surface was already chewed up. Fir is soft, so stripping with a chemical remover plus a light sand can work, but your mileage may vary and you could lose a couple millimeters of the wear layer. Take this with a grain of salt, but a full refinish on 1000 sq ft runs into real money fast.
