Picked pocket screws over a biscuit joiner for the shop cabinet, and every shelf sags a little now
I finally built the wall cabinet for my garage in Mesa last month and stood in the aisle at the hardware store for 20 minutes trying to pick between a Kreg jig and a biscuit joiner. I went with pocket screws because it was $40 cheaper and I figured it was faster. Three weeks later the middle shelf has a visible bow and my gallon paint cans slide toward the front edge. I could add a center support but the back panel is already glued and screwed on. What would you have done differently here?
Is a little sag really a problem though? A small bow in a garage cabinet holding paint cans is not the same as a kitchen shelf holding dishes, and you said yourself it slides toward the front edge, meaning it still holds the weight. Three weeks in and you're seeing it, sure, but is it still moving or did it settle? Most of these shelf bows show up fast and then stop once the wood finds its shape. Throw a straightedge on it and measure the gap, and if it's under a quarter inch over a few feet, you're probably fussing over nothing. Add a simple wood cleat under the front lip if it bugs you, no need to mess with the back panel at all.
