Watched a guy at the Rockler in Denver brace a wobbly workbench with one 2x4 and I've been doing it since
I was at the Rockler store in Denver two Saturdays ago just killing time in the hardware aisle when this older guy and his grandson were messing with a display bench that had a bad wobble. The kid was about to shim the leg and the grandpa stopped him and said racks side to side, not front to back. He grabbed a scrap 2x4, cut it at an angle with a handsaw right there, and screwed it from the back leg up to the underside of the top. The bench went dead solid in maybe 3 minutes. I've built 4 benches and always fought the wobble with shims and tightening bolts, which never really fixes it. Got home, dug out a scrap of 2x4 from my burn pile, and braced my own bench the same way. Solid as a rock now for zero dollars. My bench is only 30 inches deep though, so the angle was tight. Anyone run into issues doing this on a really deep bench, like 36 inches or more?

A guy at the lumber yard told me once that a diagonal brace works best if you put it corner to corner like an X, not just one stick. My uncle tried that on his 40 inch bench and it held fine, though he did smack his knee on it every single time he walked past.
