TIL my grandpa's 1962 hand plane works better than the $80 one I got at a big box store
I was cleaning out my grandpa's garage in Duluth last weekend and found his old Stanley No. 4 hand plane under a pile of paint cans. Brought it home, sharpened the blade on a $12 whetstone, and tried it on a sticking closet door that I'd been fighting with for weeks. Two passes and the door closed smooth as anything, while the new plane I bought in March just tore up the wood. Now I'm wondering if I should just sell the new one and hunt for old tools at estate sales. Has anyone else had luck bringing back rusty hand tools from the dead?

Man, I feel this in my bones. I went through the same thing with a beat up old Disston saw my uncle left in a shed, and after an hour with a file it cut straighter than the brand new one I'd paid forty bucks for. There's something real about the old steel too, it holds an edge forever. Big box stuff today is made to be thrown out, plain and simple. Clean up that plane, oil it, and keep it forever, you'll never need another one.
