Unpopular opinion: my neighbor said skip the primer on my fence, and 4 months later it looks like a zebra
My neighbor Bill has been building stuff for 30 years and he swore I could skip the primer on my cedar fence and just use a 2 in 1 stain. I live in Austin and the sun here is not messing around, so I figured he knew something I didn't. I went ahead and did it his way on about 80 feet of fence back in March. Now the stain is peeling off in big strips on the south side and the bare wood underneath is turning gray. I spent $140 on that 2 in 1 and I'm going to have to sand and prime the whole run anyway. If you've been burned by a shortcut like this, what did you do to fix it without redoing every board?
